Our heritage is a big part of who we are. It helps shape our identity and gives us a place in the world, but not everyone feels a connection to their roots.
Shareen King-Carr is a 3 time nominated producer working with Steve Harvey for a number of years. Shareen has built a wonderful life and career for herself, but little is known about her backstory, especially her heritage.
“Growing up it was always difficult for me in school because I was never black enough for the black people, and I was never Latin enough for the Latin people. My hair wasn’t straight like all of the other Latin girls, and I didn’t look like a black girl either,” says Shareen.
“I grew up always having that issue, and having people ask me, “What are you?” “Are you mixed?” “Are you this or that?”
To help answer her questions, Shareen turned to MyHeritage DNA. With MyHeritage DNA, she discovered her ethnic origins, family stories, and found new relatives from all over the world.
As it turns out, MyHeritage DNA traced Shareen’s ancestors from Catalonia, Spain. When people came to Puerto Rico from Spain, they mixed with people who were already on the islands, along with people from Africa and elsewhere in the Caribbean. It’s natural to see Puerto Rican, West African mixed with American, Native American and European co-existing with each other in that region of the world.
MyHeritage DNA is really easy to do – take a simple cheek swab, and then send to our lab. In a couple of weeks, you'll get an ethnicity report, percentage based on 42 ethnic regions as well as matches to people all over the world.
