In 1957, Gilbert and Grace Caldwell were turned away from their honeymoon at the Mount Airy Lodge, due to the color of their skin. The experience caused Gilbert to become a human rights activist and to this day, the couple shares their story at schools. When they spoke at Bear Tavern Elementary, their story left an incredible mark on a fifth grade class. “I feel like this is the worst thing that someone could do to someone,” says an Bear Tavern student. The children wrote letters to the Mount Airy Resort, requesting an all-expense paid trip for Gilbert and Grace and, remarcably, the couple finally got the honeymoon they deserved. “You put a mark in America that needed to be shown up,” Steve Harvey told the fifth grade class. Teacher Adopts Her Student
With over 400,000 children in foster care, Dr. Bennie stepped in to make a difference in one of those children’s lives.
